| Hypertac ®(HYPERboloid conTACt) is
an advanced design that satisfies performance requirements previously
considered impossible. The shape of the sleeve is formed by wires strung
at an angle to the socket's axis. When the pin is inserted into this
sleeve, the wires stretch to accommodate it. In so doing they wrap
themselves around the pin providing a number of linear contact paths. This
superior mating principle offers several advantages:

Low Insertion - Extraction Forces:
The controlled angle of the socket wires allows tight control of the pin
insertion and extraction forces. The spring wires are smoothly deflected
to make line contact with the pin.
Long Contact Life: The smooth and light wiping action
produces little wear of the contact surfaces Hypertac® contacts have been
tested to over 100,000 insertion extraction cycles with little degradation
in performance.
Lower Contact Resistance: Contact resistance is largely a
function of contact area and surface condition. The multiple line contacts
in the Hypertac® provide far greater contact area than other contacts of
comparable size. The positive wiping action of the wires insures a clean
and polished contact surface. Tests have shown Hypertac® have about 1/2
the resistance of conventional contact designs.
Higher Current Ratings: The design parameters of the
Hypertac® (e.g., the number, diameter, and angle of the wires) may be
modified for any requirement. For example. the number of` wires (no less
than 5) can be increased so the contact area is distributed over a larger
surface of the mating pin. Thus, the high current carried by each wire
because of its intimate line contact, can be multiplied many times. At the
same time the lower resistance reduces heat buildup. Therefore, Hypertacs®
are able to handle far greater current in smaller contact assemblies
without the detrimental effects of high temperature.
Exceptional Electrical Continuity Under Shock and Vibration: The
low mass and resultant low inertia of the wires relative to their
resilience enables them to follow the most abrupt or extreme excursions of
the pin without loss of contact. Tests conducted over the entire frequency
range showed no discontinuity even when measured as low as 3 nanoseconds.
Moreover, the contact area is not limited to a single plane. It extends
360° around the pin and is uniform over its entire length. The three
dimensional symmetry of design guarantees electrical continuity regardless
of` the direction or intensity of external or inertial forces. |
