| EMC
Testing |
Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC): Regardless of your product's destination market, if
it's electronic, electromagnetic or electromechanical, it must undergo EMC
testing to pinpoint any "harmful" electronic emissions and
determine its susceptibility to stray RF. Throughout ETL SEMKO's global
network, many of our labs are equipped with the OATS (Outdoor Area Test
Sites) and anechoic chambers, providing you with local EMC testing
capabilities the world over.
ETL SEMKO's EMC engineers will enable you
to continuously carry out both pre-compliance and full-compliance testing.
You can also receive help evaluating various technical aspects of your
products in greater detail. For example, specific customer requirements
and/or analysis of any margins for standard requirement levels regarding
emission and immunity.
We are equipped with many EMC chambers, both fully-anechoic and
semi-anechoic. In the largest of the chambers we have a 10-meter test
site, which is the requirement in most standards. We also have the
resources to perform tests at customer sites, when that is more
appropriate. ETL SEMKO is a Competent Body according to the EMC Directive
and a Notified Body according to the Radio & Telecom Terminal
Directive (R&TTE).
An electrical or electro-mechanical product bearing the worldwide EMC
Verification mark issued by ETL SEMKO or its parent company signifies that
it was tested and meets the minimum requirements of prescribed
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards.

| Performance
& Benchmark Testing |
ETL
SEMKO can provide product performance testing for virtually any
electrical, electronic or building product, to virtually any national,
international, industry or manufacturer requirements.
Some typical product testing includes:
- Capacity, air and water pressure, and
energy efficiency testing for HVAC/R equipment
- Impact and fire resistance for
protective equipment and clothing
- Intensity, spectrum analysis and
direction for residential and commercial lighting
- Not limited to these types. For instance
NEBS testing is actually performance testing, but don't know if you
want to go there.
At ETL SEMKO, performance testing
encompasses a wide range of options, as well as one-of-a-kind testing
methods developed to achieve specific objectives.
- Comparison and benchmark
testing
Before introducing a new product to the market, you can assess how it
compares to competitive products. For example, comparison performance
testing can tell a manufacturer of air conditioners if a unit's
capacity, airflow and energy efficiency stacks up against units
already on the market. You can use this data to upgrade your products
performance and enhance it's value to the customer. Determining your
product's relative market value can also help avoid overpricing of the
product.
- Testing for marketing
Whether you're introducing a new product
or creating demand for an old product, you want to know what
hard-hitting claims you can make to promote the product's value to
customers. Product performance testing enables manufacturers to
substantiate marketing claims - that they have the longest-lasting
light bulb, for example, or the most corrosion-resistant outdoor
barbecue grill.
- R&D assistance
ETL SEMKO's testing experts can get
involved as early as your product's design and development. We'll help
you assess its performance characteristics throughout the development
process, avoiding potential compliance problems that can lead to
costly redesigns and delays.
- Testing for trade associations
If your target market includes design
engineers, specifying engineers, architects and other professionals,
performance testing and certification to industry association
standards is one of the most effective ways to 1) Get your product noticed,
2) Address the target market's specific purchasing criteria and 3) Establish a credible presence for your product.
This data is then published in annual or semiannual directories,
providing buyers and specifiers with accurate, objective information
on product performance factors such as capacity, power consumption and
energy efficiency. For many product categories, including HVAC/R,
performance testing and certification is critical. In some cases,
testing to trade association standards is mandated by government
regulations, such as the U.S. Department of Energy's power consumption
efficiency ratings for appliances. We are a testing house for a number
of associations including GAMA, AHAM, ARI; and our UK facility has
provided testing for the UK government.
- Validation testing
To obtain an objective measure of your
product's performance levels, call on ETL SEMKO for a second opinion.
As a third-party testing laboratory, we can provide you with data you
can use to validate your internal R&D product performance test
data.
