Chromatography papers are made
from pure linters with an α-cellulose content >98%. They are of the
highest purity with a good resistance and outstanding quality. Their
surface is smooth (grade 2043a is particularly smooth).
Owing to the manufacturing
process, all chromatography papers have their fibers oriented in one
direction. The absorption capacity of the sheet is always slightly greater
along the fibers than at right angles to them. In order to obtain
reproducible measurements work should always be carried out in the
direction of the fibers. This is indicated by the 600 mm long edge of the
sheet. In smaller cuts the fiber direction can be determined by placing a
drop of water on the sheet. The elliptical water spot will have its
greatest diameter in the direction of the fibers.
Sub-grades ”b“ are thicker
than the ”a“ grades and are more suitable for higher volumes and
two-dimensional separations.
